Apple and Pear Tree Register
Welcome to the pear and apple tree register for Low Moor Allotments (other fruit trees are included, but are rare). Please inform us if your plot has any fruit trees and is not listed here. We hope to be able to identify all the varieties of apples and pears on the site for future generations.We are very keen to preserve the once fantastic reputation of Yorkshire orchards, many with their own varieties of apples. Defra recently issued a report that stated: Orchards covered over 1,000 ha in North Yorkshire during the 1930's, including fruit varieties indigenous to the county. These areas had fallen to just 17 ha by 1981 (Orchards in the North, Countryside Commission report). Current action through the Countryside Stewardship scheme has targeted the restoration of orchards, including the Fishlake and Sykehouse area in South Yorkshire which have their own variety of apple (approx. 13 hectares currently being restored).(Yorkshire and Humber Regional Chapter, DEFRA, 11 October 2000) Hopefully they'll start targeting the restoration of our orchard any day soon!
Apple Day is generally around 21st October - there are lots of local events this year listed on the Common Ground web site, including ones at Beningbrough and Nunnington Halls (more details on Common Ground web site above), Yorkshire Orchards at Wilberfoss, York, Rodgers at Pickering and others. If you can, take your own apples along to get them identified and report the results back to our Apple Tree Register by contacting the Site Secretary. Alternatively, some of the nurseries that specialise in apples also have identification services - Bernwode Plants is also good.
