Composting/ York Rotters * Environmental Education * Recycling * Guide to St Nicks Recycling * Room Hire * Job/ Volunteer Vacancies
This is a general guide to our kerbside collection service. If you have any enquiries, please contact the St Nicholas Fields Community Recycling team. Please keep your box clean & tidy and separate the different types of materials (eg. into plastic bags with glass in one, cans in another… but please don’t seal the bags). The better you clean, separate and flatten your recyclables, the easier it makes our job - and the better service we can provide you with.
What to put in your box? - What NOT to put in your box? - Collection dates - Do you need...? - Would you like to be a Champion?
YES, please!
Use your black recycling box for the following:
Metal METAL
food & drinks cans, empty aerosols, clean aluminium foil

Please rinse out and flatten (if possible).

Glass GLASS
all glass bottles and jars

Please rinse out, especially food jars.

Textiles & Shoes TEXTILES & SHOES
clothes and paired shoes (to be worn again), linen, blankets, handbags, belts, curtains, towels... all collected for Children’s Heart Foundation

Please put dry and clean items in a water-tight bag.

Paper PAPER
newspapers, magazines, catalogues, junk mail and scrap paper

Please remove all plastic wrapping.

Garden waste GARDEN WASTE
grass clippings, dry leaves etc.

Please leave in a bag next to the box.

Plastic bottles

Please remove tops, rinse out and flatten (essential).

We hope to be able to offer this service to everyone soon but for the time being only in certain areas we also collect:
PLASTIC BOTTLES
milk, fizzy drinks, water, shampoo, detergent etc.

But why not compost your garden as well as kitchen waste yourself? It’s not as difficult as it may seem and there are simple solutions for people with small gardens or even without one. York Rotters could help you start. For free composting advice call 411821 or send an email to

Recycling day for your street
Please leave your box out by 8am on the collection day. Do not keep your box in until you see the Recycling Team in your street because you might miss them altogether. It is very time-consuming if we have to go back to collect individual boxes and we are not likely to be able to do it on the same day.

Do you...

...need a new recycling box? If your box has gone missing, let us know and we will deliver one withing a few days.

...need a hand? If you are elderly or disabled, we can provide assistance on collection day. Please contact us.

...not have enough to fill the box? Every kilo counts. No matter how little waste you produce, it's better recycled than landfilled.

...have too much? Simply put extra materials in separate bags and place them next to your box, we will collect them.

...not have space for the box in your house/ flat? We can provide you with a smaller basket.

...want to help promote our service? Little time and effort are needed. Please see Recycling Champions.

Would you like to be a Champion?
Are you an enthusiastic recycler? Would you like to help us promote our service and help improve it? Become a Recycling Champion and you could help us by:

* delivering leaflets in your street

* putting up a poster (like the one on the left) in your window

* giving us feedback about our service

You don’t need to know lots about recycling (we’ll give you training and support) and it needn’t take up lots of your time (as little as about an hour a month). Being a Champion will mean you are a really vital part of the St Nicks Community Recycling scheme. In return we will give you a free plastic bottle crusher and a copy of a great little book called Reuse, Repair, Recycle. If you would like to know more ring John on (01904) 411821.
