Welcome to St Nicholas Fields
St Nicholas Fields (or St Nicks) is a Local Nature Reserve managed by a local community group ‘The Friends of St Nicholas Fields ’ on behalf of the City of York Council. The charity is based at the York Environment Centre located on the edge of the Reserve. From this base, Friends provide inspiration, advice, practical examples and services to enable people in York and beyond to move towards a sustainable future.
What can you see & do at St Nicks?
- Enjoy wildlife - with its wildflower meadow, rough grassland, thickets, a community woodland and two water courses, St Nicholas Fields attracts a wide range of interesting wildlife. Watch birds, butterflies and other insects or simply enjoy the green space. Learn about the local species on guided walks or join our wildlife watch group.
- Play and explore - families with children will enjoy our play area including a slide and swings. Pick fruit from the nature reserve such as apples and blackberries. Call into the Environment Centre to pick up a leaflet about our tree trail and upcoming events. Discover our butterfly walk and mini Stonehenge made of stones from the former tip.
- Visit York’s Sustainable Triangle - our guided tours include the Environment Centre, neighbouring City of York Council’s EcoDepot which includes the largest strawbale building in Europe, and the eco houses at Fieldside Place built by York Housing Association.
