Community Kids’ Allotment

Plans are now progressing to develop a Community Kids’ Allotment on Plot 108 (behind the Shop). It is hoped to start the project in March/April 2004, although there’ll be a Working Party to tidy the plot on Sunday 1st February, 10am till 1pm.

Over recent months, several Plotholders have said that they would be keen to help. Since the number of adult volunteers will determine how many children can be involved in any one session, I am now writing to invite those people, and anyone else who wants to get involved, to firm up that expression of interest!

I am currently planning a regular weekly session lasting 2 hours to be held on a Saturday morning, or afternoon, with an additional Wednesday evening session during the summer months. The project is targeted at children 8 to 12 years old, but younger children could attend with an accompanying adult. Young people older than 12 who wanted to continue could also still be involved. This may be the next generation of Plotholders at Low Moor!

Projects working with children require an operating framework which above all safeguards child protection and health & safety. Regular volunteer helpers should be Police-checked by the Criminal Records Bureau, which involves giving personal information on a form and having it verified. CRB clearance can take a few months to come through, so ideally I would like to submit some names by the end of January 2004. Occasional volunteer helpers would not require CRB clearance as long as a regular volunteer is present. A qualification in First Aid is also useful, both for this project and in other walks of life. The Allotments Association has applied for a grant to meet all the costs of the project, including funding anyone who is interested in training to obtain a First Aid qualification.

So, if you’re willing to help as a regular or occasional volunteer, or you’re prepared to help in some other way, please return the slip below to me, Angela Johnson, by December 31st – I’ll contact you in January. Thanks! – Angela
